A Short Biography of Mark Zuckerberg

At the age of 30, Mark Zuckerberg claims the 21st position among the richest people of the world (Forbes), with personal net worth of $27.7 billion. He is known to the world as co-founder of Facebook, the biggest social networking site on the web. He is the Chairman and CEO of Facebook since 2004 and takes one dollar salary.

Early Days

Born to a dentist father Edward Zuckerberg and psychiatrist mother Karen Kempner on 14 may 1984, he was brought up in Dobbs Ferry New York, along with three sisters Donna, Randi and Arielle. Although as a Jewish had bar mitzvah at the age of 13, later he turned an atheist.

While in middle school, he started writing software and learnt the use of computers. His father appointed a computer teacher for him who considered him a ‘prodigy’. By winning prizes in physics, astronomy and mathematics, he excelled in school and joined college graduate program for computer programming. In his college days, Mark developed ‘Zucknet’, as named by him, where his home computer can be connected with his father dental clinic’s computer. When his friends played computer games, he used to develop games for them. In his college days he claimed to read and write French, Hebrew, Latin and English.

College days

Mark Zuckerberg joined Harvard, with the name of ‘programming prodigy’ due to his works during his school days. There he coded a program named CourseMatch, which helped the students to select their courses based on other students’ choices and also helped to form study groups. He earned fame as well as was criticized for his new program ‘Facebooks’, where photos of two males and females from the campus were posted and they were to be rated by the other students. This became famous all over the university and college ordered to shut it down as it was making students internet freak. Some students also complained that their pictures were being used without their permission. Mark apologized publicly for this action. To complete his project Mark dropped his colleges during his sophomore years.

Facebook and Zuckerberg

Both are incomplete without each other. In January 2004 he started writing for a new website ‘TheFacebook’, along with other students namely Andrew McCollum, Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz. Earlier this site was used in Harvard only for connecting with other. Laterr in 2006 it was made public in the name Facebook. Gradually as years passed by Facebook acclaimed more than millions of profiles, had over 100000 businesses linking to the site and hosts most photographs around the world.

Facebook made its IPO on 18th May 2012, offering 421 million shares for investors at the cost of $38. Everyone was interested to acquire the shares. But there were drastic fall in the prices of the shares; they dropped even up to $19. Different law suits were there against it. However presently they have risen.

TIME magazine honored him by making him the Person of the year 2010. Presently he lives in Palo Alto, a $7 million estate with his wife Priscilla Chan and his family. He would be always remembered for changing the social networking system throughout the world.
