Some of the feelings during pregnancy can be good and some can be bad. Most of the mothers-to-be are worried and this is normal. This mix of feelings is common when it is an unplanned pregnancy or the first one. Things get a little different when you are already dealing with anxiety or depression. It is extremely important to take care of yourself for the baby’s health and your own health. Eat a healthy diet, do some exercise and get enough sleep. If you feel that there is a need of women’s mental health treatment, get help. Talk to someone about your depression and anxiety.         

Common Feelings During Pregnancy 

Mood swings are very common during pregnancy. However, don’t ignore it if you feel down all the time. Something deeper is going on if you always feel nervous. Your body of going through changes during the pregnancy. So, everyday worries and stress over being pregnant can take a toll. 

Following are the mental health problems some women can have during that time: 

  • Depression 
  • Anxiety 


Depression is when you feel down, irritable or sad for weeks or months. You might have been struggling with this problem before pregnancy. Depression can start during pregnancy as well because of the following reasons:

  • You are not happy about being pregnant.
  • You are dealing with stress due to personal or professional life.      


It is persistent, intense and excessive fear or worries about some situation. The symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Rapid breathing
  • Fast heart rate 
  • Feeling tired 
  • Sweating 

You might keep on thinking about whether you will be a good mother or not. Or, you will be able to raise a baby or not.  

Following are some other mental health problems during pregnancy:

  • Panic attacks 
  • Bipolar disorder 
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder 
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder 
  • Eating disorder

Any mental health problems during pregnancy must not be ignored. It is important to get women’s mental health treatment. Depression and anxiety can bring some other issues as well. These other issues are often left untreated. Instead of taking care of themselves, some women might end up using alcohol or even drugs to deal with depression and anxiety. This is not good for the health of the growing baby.  

How to get help?

Talk to a therapist, counselor or doctor if you feel depressed or anxious. Get help right away. Timely treatment is good for your and your unborn baby’s health.

When you visit a doctor, don’t talk about your mental health only, talk about your overall health, both present and past. Let the doctor know your complete mental health.    

Different Women’s Mental Health Treatments During Pregnancy

Prescription medicine 

Always stay in touch with your doctor. If your doctor has prescribed some medications, don’t start or stop taking without asking your doctor. Tell your doctor if you are taking any medicine for depression or any other mental illness and you are also pregnant. If you are taking these medications and planning to get pregnant, talk to your doctor. Keep in mind that some medications can cause problems for the baby. However, not taking medicines can make things worse. So, always follow the treatment plan your doctor has created for you and your baby.

Talk therapy 

One-on-one therapy can help in dealing with depression, managing stress, and helping with anxiety during pregnancy. You can also find a support group. In this group, you can express your concerns and get advice from other mothers. Some of these mothers have already gone through this stage. You can also talk to a social worker. A counselor can tell you how to deal with money issues.       

Other approaches 

You might find comfort in exercise, meditation, yoga, and other similar activities. You can also talk to a friend or family members.
